Bruce Willis is gonna DIE HARD again? UNBREAKABLE 2?

Bruce Willis has been making the rounds promoting COP OUT, which opens this weekend, but some really big news came out of him during an interview with MTV.  It all started when Bruce uttered the words, “I think we’re going to do a DIE HARD 5 next year.”  Wait, what’s this?  Wasn’t LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD supposed to be John McClane’s big send off?  Guess not.  Willis added “The John McClane that exists is only in film and in people’s minds.  And it continues to grow, that mythology continues to grow…”

Bruce then added “I would hire Len Wiseman right now.”  Wiseman directed the fourth installment of the DIE HARD franchise which was released in 2007, and did very well in the box office.  Clearly fans were excited to see John McClane back on the big screen, no matter what his current age may be.  Willis also seemed to have ideas on where the franchise could go from here, finishing with “Well it’s got to go worldwide,” and “That would be my contribution to [the next movie].”  Bruce also seems to appreciate audiences welcoming him back in that role, stating “I take a certain amount of pride in being part of that [mythology], and the fact that I still get to do it.”

What do you think?  Are you ready to see another big screen outing with John McClane?  Would it make sense to have McClane take on a worldwide threat?  After all, that character is in many ways a pre-cursor to 24’s Jack Bauer, and that guy is saving the world every day!  I did enjoy LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD, but it seemed to be missing a proper villain for McClane.  Not that I don’t like Timothy Olyphant, but his baddie in the fourth installment was a little too metro-sexual for most people’s tastes, including my own.  Bruce needs a more formidable thug to fight, and one that he can go fists to fists with at the end… something that was missing in the last outing.  If you have a few minutes, listen to my interview (open as MP3, or right-click and save) with Bruce from back in June of 2007, when I talked to him for LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD, where he mentions he might do another one… guess it was always a possibility in his mind.

Bruce Willis starred in M. Night Shyamalan's UNBREAKABLE in 2000

BUT that’s not all.  During that interview, Willis also touched upon the possibility that he and M. Night Shyamalan may reteam for another UNBREAKABLE movie.  He noted that they originally planned to do a fight movie between his character and Samuel L. Jackson’s character of Mr. Glass, but opted to do the origin story instead.  Apparently Shyamalan is still a bit interested in a follow-up.  Looks like Bruce is all for it, saying “As long as Sam can make… yeah, I’m up for it.”  Willis seems fine with the amount of time that has passed since the first movie, and appears comfortable to revisit the role of David Dunn.  UNBREAKABLE wasn’t a phenomenal hit when it was released in 2000 (though it did make a profit), but has had a strong life on home video, and has definitely developed a cult following.  I always said I think UNBREAKABLE is the best comic book movie ever made not based on an actual comic book, so I’d love to see that story get a sequel.  Tell us your thoughts below.
