THE HURT LOCKER director Kathryn Bigelow goes to HBO

She’s one of the hottest directors in Hollywood right now, bringing us the critically acclaimed (an Oscar nominated) THE HURT LOCKER in 2009 – Kathryn Bigelow has truly transcended the popcorn movie director status she had after films like NEAR DARK, BLUE STEEL, POINT BREAK, STRANGE DAYS, and K-19: THE WIDOWMAKER.  I always liked her movies, but THE HURT LOCKER has taken her to the coveted Academy Award level, and it’s safe to say she’s currently a moviemaking force to be reckoned with.  Well now HBO has signed on Bigelow to direct A MIRACULOUS YEAR, the pilot for a drama series by hot movie writer John Logan (GLADIATOR, THE AVIATOR).  The series is said to be an examination of a New York family as seen through the lens of a charismatic, self-destructive Broadway composer. Logan will be executive producing with Bigelow and Lydia Pilcher.  Filming is set to begin in May or June.

Bigelow is also attached to direct the South America-set movie TRIPLE FRONTIER, but doesn’t often touch TV, though she has lent her talents  to 3 episode of HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREET for NBC, and ABC’s critically hailed but sadly failed KAREN SISCO series.  A MIRACULOUS YEAR is the first pilot Kathryn has taken on.

HBO has been going for bigger name Hollywood auteurs lately, as upcoming series include collaborations and contributions from top directors like Martin Scorsese and Michael Mann.  Adding Bigelow to the mix could mean big things for HBO’s new programming, which has always been fairly solid.
