The new movie GAMBIT is actually a remake of a 1966 movie starring Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine – a film many consider to be one of the greatest heist flicks of all time. The 2012 version (released in the UK in 2012, in the U.S. in 2013) is written by Joel and Ethan Coen, the men responsible for amazing films as TRUE GRIT, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, THE BIG LEBOWSKI and FARGO (to name but a few), but is actually directed by Michael Hoffman… a man who many probably aren’t familiar with. Hoffman’s last film was 2009’s THE LAST STATION, but he’s also done memorable movies like SOAPDISH. This new take on GAMBIT stars Colin Firth, Cameron Diaz, Alan Rickman, Stanley Tucci, and Cloris Leachman. While it definitely looks quirky, there’s also an element here that feels like it’s trying really hard. The Coen’s aren’t infallible with remakes either, as THE LADYKILLERS is considered by many (including me) to be a rather disappointing film with a great cast… but I tend to forgive most of their shortcomings, as the majority of their work is damn near perfect.
