See what director José Padilha’s ROBOCOP (2013) full suit & car will look like here

LATEST UPDATE: Okay, so apparently this is actually not from the movie, so we’re replacing it with a stealth shot from the set – something I hate to do.

UPDATE: Some are saying this may just be early concept art, or even fan art. We’re checking into it.

Earlier this year I had the extreme honor of hosting the 25th Anniversary Q&A for the original ROBOCOP at the historic Texas Theatre, as part of the Dallas International Film Festival. On the panel for that talk was co-writers and creators Michael Miner and Edward Neumeier, executive producer Jon Davison, and the one and only Peter Weller. At one point late in the Q&A, I asked the guys how they felt about the fact ROBOCOP was getting a reboot. The audience gasped, and even Peter Weller asked how can you remake it, and calling the idea silly. I was surprised people weren’t more aware a remake was on the way. But as a matter of fact it is, and director José Padilha is shooting it right now. Joel Kinnaman plays Officer Alex Murphy/Robocop, with a cast that includes impressive names like Jackie Earle Haley, Michael Keaton, Clive Owen, Jay Baruchel, Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, and Abbie Cornish. The screenplay is written by Nick Schenk, James Vanderbilt and Joshua Zetumer, and while based on the character created by Miner and Neumeier, this one promises to be a little different. The budget is estimated at $100 million… half of which might be going to that great cast. There’s been a few spy pics floating around the net from the set, but I’m not big on posting those – I prefer something a little more official. The following image is being called a “rendering” of what the suit will look like in the film, followed by a photo of the futuristic police car you’ll see Murphy driving. I love the car, not too sure about the suit – guess we’ll have to wait until we see it in action. I’m having a hard time imagining how this thing is functional, as the parts don’t look like easily moving part, but I guess we’ll find out soon enough. Take a look for yourself and tell us your thoughts in the comments.

In RoboCop, the year is 2028 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy (Kinnaman) is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilizes their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.

Here is the spy pic of the real suit, the one we originally posted wasn’t it.

OKAY, so we now know this is NOT the real deal

ROBOCOP is set to be released August 9, 2013
