Even though AVATAR has been the biggest film of the past month, SHERLOCK HOLMES was another 2009 holiday favorite, and even won Robert Downey Jr. a Golden Globe award. The film, which was quite successful in its own right (earning $389 million worldwide in one month), also served as a solid comeback for director Guy Ritchie. Recently there was talk about Ritchie helming a LOBO movie, based on the popular DC Comics character, though it seems as if that film may be having more troubles than it’s worth. Now it appears Ritchie has set aside LOBO to focus on getting a SHERLOCK HOLMES sequel made as soon as possible, at least according to producer Joel Silver, who is behind both HOLMES and LOBO. In an interview with the L.A. Times, Silver was quoted as saying “I don’t think he’s going to do it now,” in regards to Ritchie and LOBO. “The studio wants us and Guy to focus on making another ‘Sherlock Holmes.’ So I think we’re going to be doing that. But we’re seeing what happens with this. Everybody is analyzing everything. It’s all kind of happening right now as we talk. ‘Sherlock’ is sitting at just about $400 million in worldwide gross and showing itself to be pretty effective and pretty strong. So we’re trying to see if we can do something quickly with another ‘Sherlock Holmes’ movie. We have some ideas and some good story points.”
The question now is whether or not LOBO will be held back until Guy Ritchie is done with SHERLOCK HOLMES 2, or will the studio look for someone else to take on the violent comic character. Silver added, “I would guess a dfferent director,” and “It’s all happening at once now. Everybody is talking about everything …. It’s an ongoing conversation. Downey loves the experience of playing Sherlock and would love to play him again, and I’d love to see him play it again. Jude and all of them will be back and it will be great.”
Silver did state his love for the character of Lobo, stating “It was created as a rebuttal to the Marvel characters and his vest said ‘Bite me fanboy,’ ” and “It was very much a response to Wolverine and Punisher and the other characters and I think now that makes it fresh [for moviegoers]. We’re working on it now and it will be nice to put it together and make it happen.”
In regards to the rumor that Brad Pitt would be in the HOLMES sequel as Professor Moriarty, Silver sounded unsure, stating “Well, I mean, we talked about that at one point, but you know as of right now we’re not sure what we’re going to do. We’ll see what happens.”
