Director Peter Berg appears to be following in the footsteps of Michael Bay and the TRANSFORMERS movies with his adaptation of the popular Hasbro game with the big screen blockbuster BATTLESHIP. If the trailers are any indication of what audiences can expect, some might actually think Bay was behind the camera on this one too. The film stars Taylor Kitsch, Rihanna, Brooklyn Decker, Alexander Skarsgard, Jesse Plemmons, and Liam Neeson. Berg previously made stars out of Kitsch and Plemmons on the popular series FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, so some may justifiably call this a bit of a reunion of sorts. This new trailer shows there’s a bit more going on outside of the ocean battle, and makes us wonder if the results of said battle will affect whether or not the rest of the world survives. Granted, it doesn’t look like a particularly smart film, but it sure does look entertaining. I love the fact the aliens appear to be shooting giant pegs… you know, like the pegs you use in the actual game. Check out the newest trailer and leave your thoughts in the comments.
Peter Berg (Hancock) produces and directs Battleship, an epic-scaled action-adventure that unfolds across the seas, in the skies and over land as our planet fights for survival against a superior force. Inspired by Hasbro’s classic naval combat game, Battleship stars Taylor Kitsch as Lt. Alex Hopper, a Naval officer assigned to the USS John Paul Jones; Brooklyn Decker as Sam Shane, a physical therapist and Hopper’s fiancee; Alexander Skarsgard as Hopper’s older brother, Stone, Commanding Officer of the USS Sampson; Rihanna as Petty Officer Raikes, Hopper’s crewmate and a weapons specialist on the USS John Paul Jones; and international superstar Liam Neeson as Hopper and Stone’s superior (and Sam’s father), Admiral Shane.
BATTLESHIP opens May 18, 2012.
I enjoy the Transformers movies for what they are ( for the record, I’m a big TF fan, though I was able to let go of certain past conventions ), but seeing the sound and editing effects get rehashed into a different franchise waters things down for me. I’m going to have to watch this as a Redbox rental.
