If you’re unsure whether of not Disney’s JOHN CARTER is the kind of movie you’d like to see, the Mouse House has posted the first 10 minutes of director Andrew (WALL-E) Stanton’s film online, which should give you a good idea of what to expect… at least for the Earth scenes. Granted, none of this shows us any of the otherworldly stuff which makes up the bulk of the project, but they gotta save something for the moviegoing experience. While I have tremendous faith in Stanton as a director, I was a little apprehensive about the film for a while – changing the name to just JOHN CARTER instead of JOHN CARTER OF MARS (which I still say it should be titled), the casting of Taylor Kitsch in the role, the fact the Disney was releasing it… all of those things made me a bit nervous. But hopefully you’ll agree after watching this clip that the end result looks fun and perfectly cinematic. Honestly, there’s great stuff going on here, and if Stanton can do this well with the scenes on Earth, just imagine what the space stuff will be like. I also like Kitsch’s subtle take on Carter, being a tough guy and determined, but not without a conscience. These opening moments give you a strong idea of what to expect from his character. I’m also hoping we’ll see more of Darryl Sabarra (SPY KIDS films) as young Edgar Rice Burroughs. Check it out for yourself, and as always leave your thoughts in the comments. The full cast includes Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Samantha Morton, Mark Strong, Ciaran Hinds, Dominic West, James Purefoy, Daryl Sabara, Polly Walker, Bryan Cranston, Thomas Hayden Church, and Willem Dafoe.
From Academy Award(R)-winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton comes “John Carter”–a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars). “John Carter” is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.
JOHN CARTER opens March 9, 2012
