Ivan Reitman is directing GHOSTBUSTERS 3… thank you God

GHOSTBUSTERS 3 just keeps gaining momentum, and why shouldn’t it?  Everyone wants it.  The players behind it seem keen to do it.  And now it looks like the man behind the first two outings, legendary comedy director Ivan Reitman, will be returning once again to direct this third installment.  Josh Horowitz at MTV spoke to Reitman recently, and got a bit of info out of him on the subject.

The only thing that scares me is that supposedly the working script was penned by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, who wrote the absolutely unfunny and awful YEAR ONE – which incidentally was one of my picks for worst films of 2009. Maybe they’ll overcome that, one can hope. Apparently (according to Reitman) their script has been turned in, and a second draft is being worked on. Ivan stated “They have delivered a draft,” and “We are working our way through another draft… good work is being done and all of us have our fingers crossed.”

Then MTV cornered him on Sigourney Weaver’s rumor dropping, regarding Bill Murray playing a ghost, and her on-screen son Oscar growing up to be a Ghostbuster. Reitman stated the following:

“I’m not going to comment on what’s in the script and on what Sigourney may or may not have said. She’s been so busy on ‘Avatar,’ I’ve not been able to find her. There’s some very cool things in the new draft, let’s just put it that way.”

Ivan was quoted as saying, “I hope to start shooting in this next year” – Harold Ramis had previously said the film was shooting for a 2011 release, and if it goes into production soon, that’s entirely possible. When asked specifically if he would return to direct the third outing, Reitman answered – “Yes.” So we’ve got Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Sigourney Weaver, hopefully Ernie Hudson, and possibly Rick Moranis (who is saying he’d break his retirement from acting for this) – these next few years feel like someone asked my generation “What do you guys want to see on the big screen?” – and then said yes to all requests.  There is a God.
