This will undoubtedly leave some fans outraged, but it’s only a temporary change… so relax. STAR WARS FAN DAYS has become a staple for the Dallas-area convention circuit every October. 2009 saw the third installment of the event, hosted by Official Pix, and done with assistance from Lucasfilm. FAN DAYS has also filled the void left by STAR WARS CELEBRATION, which hasn’t been held in the United States since its fourth installment in 2006. Recently, CELEBRATION was announced to return this year, in Orlando this time, and will be held in early August. Since these dates fall so closely to the normal FAN DAYS dates, it was decided that this year Official Pix would host STAR TREK FAN DAYS instead. I guess you can blame me on this, since it was actually my suggestion, but I also felt it made a lot of sense, especially since STAR TREK has seen a resurgence in popularity thanks to the J.J. Abrams reboot last year. Abrams re-imagining made many film critics’ Top 10 lists of 2009 (including my own), and has breathed new life into the Gene Roddenberry franchise. There are still plenty of STAR TREK fans out there, and the Dallas area hasn’t seen any sort of “official” TREK con in quite some time. The Tulsa TREK EXPO has done an admirable job bringing TREK guests to the Southwest every summer, and will do so again this June. STAR TREK FAN DAYS promises to bring a wide variety of TREK guests, and also some popular non-TREK (but sci-fi related) names as well. Fans of STAR WARS FAN DAYS need not worry, as the beloved event will most certainly return, only not in such close proximity to another official STAR WARS convention. We’ll keep you posted on any updates.
In the meantime, Official Pix will be hosting three other events aside from STAR WARS FAN DAYS in 2010. First up, this month’s DALLAS COMIC CON, the 14th installment of the popular DFW show – held on January 30-31. Next up is the SCI-FI EXPO in April, and the 15th DALLAS COMIC CON in late-August.
Hell yeah!!
I am excited for this. even before guests are announced!
Looking forward to October
Wow what a joke. You cant substitute star trek for star wars. My son was really looking forward to this and now we have nothing. Yes the star trek movie was good but I think it was flat out wrong to change this event. August to October and 1700 miles is not exactly close in anyone’s opinion except maybe yours.
Well Loyd, there’s always next year. With Star Wars Celebration returning this year in Florida just two months prior, it would have been pretty redundant to do a Star Wars Fan Days right after. Even Lucasfilm agrees with that, so it’s not just my opinion, as you’d like to believe. So you know, we’ve had a tremendous amount of positive response over Star Trek Fan Days, and as you can see by checking the guest list, the talent is not just limited to Trek names. In the convention business, one constant has always been that you can’t please everyone, only try to do the best show you can with the resources available. Star Wars Fan Days isn’t gone forever, just put on hold. Just because your not a fan of Trek is no reason to spit in the face of those who are.
It was a GREAT show. Could have used more Klingons but it was still good.
The only real complaint was the crowding. The convention center was PACKED. Starfleet, Stormtroopers, and those blue guys from Avatar…sci-fi fans of every stripe filled the building.
Just as a follow up. I chose not to attend the star trek fan days. I heard it was good and admit that I enjoy star trek. I still think that the star wars theme should have continued. I hope that it returns this year. I was looking forward to a large convention. My son has become a huge star wars fan and is looking forward to a fun star wars time. I still maintain that the happenings in florida were not really relevant to local fans.
