While it’s probably safe to say that while AMERICAN PIE was a fun throwback to the sex comedies of yesteryear, the sequels that followed never quite seemed to recapture the magic, and the direct-to-video attempts at spin-off stories almost felt like they weren’t even trying. But I still have a soft spot in my heart for the original, and there’s something about those characters that just works. The newest entry in the franchise, and many might assume the final entry, is AMERICAN REUNION. The entire cast (from what I can tell) of the first film is back, even a few of the parents… and John Cho, who yes, was the “MILF!” guy in the inaugural outing. The new trailer looks nostalgically fun, and I’ll admit makes me want to see what they do with this one. That said, I do think they should end it here. This feels like a nice cap to the series, and considering the complete feeling of bringing back everyone, one would hope they can all go out on a high note. In a way I feel like I’ve grown up with these characters, which may be the franchise’s biggest strength. This one is directed by HAROLD AND KUMAR pioneers Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, and look for Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Seann William Scott, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Chris Klein, Mena Suvari, Shannon Elizabeth, Tara Reid, Natasha Lyonne, Eugene Levy, and Jennifer Coolidge to all return. Check out the trailer for AMERICAN REUNION below, and see if the nostalgia isn’t grabbing your moviegoing soul too. Be sure to leave your thoughts in the comments.
In the comedy American Reunion, all the American Pie characters we met a little more than a decade ago are returning to East Great Falls for their high-school reunion. In one long-overdue weekend, they will discover what has changed, who hasn’t and that time and distance can’t break the bonds of friendship. It was summer 1999 when four small-town Michigan boys began a quest to lose their virginity. In the years that have passed, Jim and Michelle married while Kevin and Vicky said goodbye. Oz and Heather grew apart, but Finch still longs for Stifler’s mom. Now these lifelong friends have come home as adults to reminisce about—and get inspired by—the hormonal teens who launched a comedy legend.
AMERICAN REUNION opens on April 6th, 2012
