Coolest promo at New York Comic-Con? – RED TAILS poster by Joe Kubert

Originally I was going to attend New York Comic-Con over the weekend, which would have been my first time at the show. Sadly, plans changed, but I got quite a few reports from the show floor. As with most big shows, there were lots of cool promo goodies for attendees to pick up, if they were brave enough to face the crowds. One of the coolest I’ve seen so far came in the form of a promotional poster for the George Lucas-produced war film RED TAILS, Lucasfilm’s long-awaited film about the Tuskegee air experiments in World War II.  What makes it so cool is that it features artwork by classic comic book artist Joe Kubert, famous for his many war comics through the years at DC.  Take a look.

Not sure how these were distributed, but I can honestly say I’m jealous for not having one on my wall.  Kubert was a seminal illustrator for DC Comics a.k.a. All-American Comics dating back to the 1940’s.  Some of his more popular titles included SGT. ROCK, GI COMBAT, HAWKMAN, TARZAN, and TOR, to name but a few.  In 1976 Joe founded The Kubert School, teaching aspiring comic book artists the methods behind sequential art and storytelling.  There are only a few creators still alive who qualify for the word “legend” in the comic book industry – Joe Kubert is definitely one of those names.  If you haven’t seen it, check out the trailer for RED TAILS below, and if you attended the New York Comic-Con over the weekend and for some strange reason you ended up with a handful of Kubert posters… hook me up!

RED TAILS is due in theaters on January 20, 2012.
