In anticipation of the upcoming release of Captain America: The First Avenger on July 22, we started to think about common themes that run through all superhero stories, including the ones that have been released this summer. And it seems to us that education is Priority #1. Superheroes must learn how to use their superpowers with extraordinary precision and control, or else they could do serious damage to themselves, to others, or even the entire planet. That applies even if they’re ordinary people who are gifted with extraordinary powers. So we’re counting down the top 8 moments when superheroes got schooled in the movies.

4. Kick-Ass
“You’re gonna be fine, baby doll!” Damon Macready (Nicolas Cage) is about to shoot his daughter Mindy (Chloe Grace-Moretz) in the chest with a handgun, which is the perfect time for him to review with her the speed at which a handgun travels. (More than 700 miles an hour, in case you’re wondering.) Throughout their scenes together, Damon is always testing Mindy, always teaching, always training, molding her into Hitgirl, the superhero version of herself, but it’s the first scene where we see them together that shocks, amazes, and, perhaps, makes us laugh out loud. (Though we’re not sure we’d actually want one of our teachers to shoot us with a handgun.)

Check in tomorrow to see who’s next!
