In anticipation of the upcoming release of Captain America: The First Avenger on July 22, we started to think about common themes that run through all superhero stories, including the ones that have been released this summer. And it seems to us that education is Priority #1. Superheroes must learn how to use their superpowers with extraordinary precision and control, or else they could do serious damage to themselves, to others, or even the entire planet. That applies even if they’re ordinary people who are gifted with extraordinary powers. So we’re counting down the top 8 moments when superheroes got schooled in the movies.

6. Unbreakable
An ordinary security guard, David Dunn (Bruce Willis) doesn’t realize he has any kind of “special” powers; he just thinks of himself as an extraordinary healthy, lucky man — with marital troubles and a son he dearly loves — until he makes the acquaintance of a man named Elijah Price (Samuel L. Jackson). Elijah tries to open his eyes, but David resists. The superhero’s best schooling comes from an unlikely source: David’s son, Joseph (Spencer Treat Clark). And it’s not what Joseph says, it’s what he does. David is working out in the basement, lifting weights. Joseph has heard Elijah’s theory about his father, and decides to test it out by adding weights instead of removing them. David finally accepts that there might be something to Elijah’s theory; learning an important lesson that will come in mighty handy really soon.
