8 Days of Superheroes that got Schooled – Part 1: THE ROCKETEER

We welcome our newest contributor, the great Peter Martin, with a timely article about superheroes!

In anticipation of the upcoming release of Captain America: The First Avenger on July 22, we started to think about common themes that run through all superhero stories, including the ones that have been released this summer. And it seems to us that education is Priority #1. Superheroes must learn how to use their superpowers with extraordinary precision and control, or else they could do serious damage to themselves, to others, or even the entire planet. That applies even if they’re ordinary people who are gifted with extraordinary powers. So we’re counting down the top 8 moments when superheroes got schooled in the movies.

Let’s start with one of those “ordinary” people …

8. The Rocketeer
Starting on a more positive note, we travel to 1938 Los Angeles, where pilot Cliff Secord (Bill Campbell) loves Jenny Blake (Jennifer Connelly). The more pressing issue, however, is a mysterious rocket pack that has fallen into Cliff’s lap and soon attracts the attention of local thugs, the FBI, Hollywood star Neville Sinclair (Timothy Dalton) and the legendary Howard Hughes (Terry O’Quinn). Let’s cut to the teachable moment: Cliff wants to use the rocket pack to make money, while his mechanic and best buddy Peevy (Alan Arkin) gently reminds him: “Clifford, when you borrow somethin’, you don’t tell nobody, they call that stealing you know.” Cliff is hard-headed and convinces Peevy to go along with his scheme, but he would have saved himself a lot of pain if he had just listened to his friend.
