Kevin Costner cast as “Jonathan Kent” in Zack Snyder’s SUPERMAN reboot

So we know that British actor Henry Cavill is the new Superman.  But we’ve yet to hear of other actors to be cast in the intended reboot from Warner Brothers (with the exception of a rumor that Lindsay Lohan may be Ursa), and let’s face it, we need some recognizable faces in this one to help put butts back in Super-seats.  It was reported at Deadline that Kevin Costner was being courted for a pivotal role in director Zack Snyder’s reboot of the Superman franchise, titled SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF STEEL, starring Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman.  Shortly after, Latino Review posted a more definitive story, stating that Costner is in fact going to be playing Jonathan Kent, or “Pa Kent” as he’s commonly known within the comic book community.  For those not in the know, Ma and Pa Kent found the boy of steel as a baby when his rocket crashed on earth after leaving the doomed planet Krypton… seriously, is there ANYONE out there that’s doesn’t know this origin by now?  Adding a name like Costner’s could be a nice step in the right direction for Snyder’s take on the staple DC Comics character.  In SUPERMAN RETURNS (2006) the role of Jonathan Kent was absent, as that film was meant to take place after the first two SUPERMAN movies starring Christopher Reeve, in which Pa Kent (Glen Ford) passed away of a heart attack.  This new casting definitively lets us know that the upcoming film doesn’t follow that timeline.  The question now, I suppose, is who will plays Ma Kent?  Perhaps Costner’s ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES co-star Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio would be a fun choice, or maybe even BULL DURHAM‘s Susan Sarandon?  Other major roles have yet to be cast as well.  We have no idea who Lois Lane will be, or Jimmy Olsen, or Perry White.  But when your second casting name is a big one like Kevin, it definitely makes us curious what other stars we’ll see attached to this project.  How do you feel about Costner as Pa Kent?  Tell us in the comments below.
