THE TOURIST trailer – Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp in a Hitchcock-ish thriller

Fans of Alfred Hitchcock thrillers like TO CATCH A THIEF or NORTH BY NORTHWEST or THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH will undoubtedly see some similarities in this new trailer for THE TOURIST, which stars box office megastars Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp.  The production of this film was notoriously plagued with delays, recasting of the leads, and even a change of director.  Several high profile stars, including Sam Worthington, Tom Cruise, and Charlize Theron were all at one point attached, before Depp and Jolie took on the leads.  That said, the end result looks… fun, at least.  The supporting cast is pretty solid too, including Paul Bettany, Rufus Sewell, Timothy Dalton (who I wish was used in more films), and Steven Berkoff (the baddie from BEVERLY HILLS COP, who I could’ve sworn had passed away years ago – glad I was wrong).  It’s helmed by German director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck.

Frank is an American tourist visiting Italy to mend a broken heart. Elise is an extraordinary woman who deliberately crosses his path. Against the breathtaking backdrop of Venice, Frank pursues a potential romance but soon finds himself the pursued as he and Elise are caught in a whirlwind of intrigue and danger.

Take a look at the trailer below and tell us your thoughts.  Not sure what I think of Depp’s beard action, but both actors look right at home in this big screen thriller done in classic Hollywood form.  Let’s hope the film lives up to the trailer’s fun feeling.

THE TOURIST opens December 10, 2010
