THE BAD GUYS turned out to be a surprise hit in 2022, blending an Anime-style with American crime caper concepts, resulting in a very fun and exciting heist movie. THE BAD GUYS 2 brings back the gang for another adventure, and hits DVD and Blu-ray this week. We received a copy of the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, and it did not disappoint. It’s loaded with awesome bonus features like Deleted Scenes, behind the scenes making of videos, character featurettes, and even a “how to draw” featurette kids will love.
The Big Picture – like many Universal Pictures home video releases, the picture and visual here are excellent. The striking colors are rich and vibrant, and really pop off the screen with an almost 3D dynamic. I actually have a 3D television, which has a “faux 3D” feature, and I’m going to rewatch this with that on to see how it plays, but even playing it normally is a spectacular experience. The transfer is crisp and flawless, no complaints whatsoever for the visuals here.
The Big Sound – as you might expect, the sound mix is exceptional and really solid for this release. I tested the sound dynamics using both surround sound and simply using a sound bar, and it’s bold and dynamic either way. The voices all come through clearly and are easy to understand, which can sometimes be a problem with animated films. Not to worry, the sound on this release is wonderful.
The Big Features – I have no complaints, the features on this release are plentiful and fun, with my favorite being the feature commentary that features Director Pierre Perifel, Co-Director JP Sans, Head of Character Animation Benjamin Willis, Head of Story Katherine de Vries, and Head of Cinematography, Layout Théophile Bondoux. It gives great insight on the making of the film, and how the filmmakers wanted to utilize these characters this time around. I’m one of those people who can be happy with JUST a commentary track as a bonus feature on a Blu-ray or DVD, and this is a good one, but it’s one of many nice features included, and the features smartly appeal to both kids and adults. It’s especially fun seeing clips of the voice cast (folks like Sam Rockwell, Awkwafina, Craig Robinson, Marc Maron, Richard Ayoade and others) hamming it up for the recording booth sessions, and it also gives you a fun idea of what it’s like watching them perform these characters when no one is normally looking.
The Big Finale – overall this is an excellent home video release, and a really fun sequel to an endearing Dreamworks Animation franchise. Universal has done a great job with their product, and makes me look forward to other upcoming animated releases. THE BAD GUYS 2 is a definite must own, especially for animation fans. This is a beautiful movie, and looks incredible on a 4K television, the kind of release that doesn’t beg for an update down the line. Grab it, now!

Born and raised in Dallas, Mark has been a movie critic since 1994, with reviews featured in print, radio and National TV. In 2001 he started the Entertainment section of the Herorealm website, where he contributed film reviews and celebrity interviews until 2004. In addition to Hollywood reporting, Mark has worked for many years as an advertising and sci-fi/comic book artist.
