While some films are getting pushed back or in some places canceled, the fifth Indiana Jones movie seems to quickly be bringing things together. We already knew that FORD v FERRARI and LOGAN director James Mangold would be sitting in for Steven Spielberg, and Harrison Ford is returning to the title role. Last week, news broke that award-winning FLEABAG writer and actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge joined the cast, and legendary composer John Williams is returning to score the film (likely his last before retirement, we’d guess). Now we have more exciting news, again in the form of a casting announcement. The talented Mads Mikkelsen (HANNIBAL, ANOTHER ROUND) is joining the cast of the movie, though at this time it’s unknown what role he’ll be playing… can we assume the villain? Maybe Belloq’s son? That might be wishful thinking. Since INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL was set in the late 1950s, we can imagine this next film will take place in the 1960s. If the script wanted to connect this (what we’d predict to be) last Ford outing with the first movie, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, then Mads could be the right age to play the offspring of a character in RAIDERS. Again, maybe wishful thinking. But then again, Phoebe Waller-Bridge is said to to be the female lead, so maybe she’s the villain of the story. Mikkelsen is no stranger to working with Disney/Lucasfilm after starring in ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY.
Mangold is co-writing INDIANA JONES 5 with Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth, who previously penned FORD v FERRARI. The film is set to begin production sometime this summer, and we know the scheduled release date is intended to be July 29, 2022. Mangold will be producing along with Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, and Simon Emanuel for Disney and Lucasfilm. More as it develops! Are you excited to see Indy go on one last adventure?
