The new Doug Liman film CHAOS WALKING has had a very rough journey, already pushed back almost two years due to the studio (Lionsgate) not being happy with the end result, and reportedly spending several million dollars to shoot new scenes and hopefully make the movie better. And with Covid-19 resulting in major releases either getting delayed or in some cases going direct to streaming services, it’s a wonder this film is actually coming out at all. We can only hope audiences will enjoy all the hard work that went into it. Liman’s films sometimes tend to be pretty high concept, and in the case of EDGE OF TOMORROW can even turn out really good and still not find substantial box office success, even if they become cult classics after the fact. This new movie stars Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley in a story about about a planet filled with only men who discover a woman that crash lands on the surface. And these men exhibit an interesting trait, in which an outside “voice” surrounds them at all times, revealing their most personal thoughts. Add to the conflict a mysterious creature that looks to be coming after them, and you have a sci-fi survival adventure that definitely looks interesting, but based on its history begs the question of whether or not the story works as a film. The trailer below does look cool, I’ll say that, so maybe the end result now will surprise folks when it hits theaters this January. The cast also includes Mads Mikkelsen, Demián Bichir, Cynthia Erivo, Nick Jonas, Kurt Sutter, and David Oyelowo. This is actually based on the Patrick Ness book titled “The Knife of Never Letting Go”, and the screenplay is by Ness and Christopher Ford (SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING). In the not too distant future, Todd Hewitt (Tom Holland) discovers Viola (Daisy Ridley), a mysterious girl who crash lands on his planet, where all the women have disappeared and the men are afflicted by “the Noise” – a force that puts all their thoughts on display. In this dangerous landscape, Viola’s life is threatened – and as Todd vows to protect her, he will have to discover his own inner power and unlock the planet’s dark secrets.
