Marvel’s THE NEW MUTANTS movie is based on the comic book of the same name, but many X-MEN and Marvel mutant fans were surprised by the initial trailer, and if you missed that you may be surprised by what you’re about to see below. This doesn’t look or feel anything like an X-Men type of movie, other than using the word “mutant”, but rather like a horror film or psychological thriller with a dark tone. Granted, some of the issues of The New Mutants comics dealt with darker storylines, but this is still a radically different direction to take these characters. These days we’re seeing so many comic book movies, it may just be the natural progression to take the subject matter in a much different direction, if only to avoid superhero fatigue. The film stars Maisie Williams (as Rahne Sinclair / Wolfsbane), Anya Taylor-Joy (Illyana Rasputin / Magik), Charlie Heaton (Sam Guthrie / Cannonball), Alice Braga (Dr. Cecilia Reyes), Henry Zaga (Sunspot / Roberto da Costa) and Blu Hunt (Danielle Moonstar / Mirage). Directed by Josh Boone, it’s produced by Simon Kinberg, Karen Rosenfelt and Lauren Shuler Donner, with a screenplay by Josh Boone & Knate Lee. And in case you’re thinking Boone may come from a horror background, you’d be wrong there, as his last film was the somewhat sappy romance THE FAULT IN OUR STARS… however his next project is Stephen King’s THE STAND series, so…. maybe he’s letting out a few things here. Take a look below and tell us your thoughts in the comments. And yes, this was pushed back, multiple times actually. The last time we posted about it, it was supposed to be out in April of 2018, then February of 2019… then Disney bought 20th Century Fox, and some wondered if this would ever come out, especially after the failure of DARK PHOENIX. Now it’s scheduled for an April 2020 release.
Held in a secret facility against their will, five new mutants have to battle the dangers of their powers, as well as the sins of their past. They aren’t out to save the world — they’re just trying to save themselves.
