In my younger days, I was a Sonic the Hedgehog fan. The SEGA Genesis video game was one of the most intense and addictive of its time. It seems only natural that Hollywood would try to make a big screen version of the character. For years a SONIC THE HEDGEHOG movie has been talked about, but now it’s finally here, but the initial result was… kinda weird. The first trailer met with horrible backlash from fans, extremely negative reactions mostly due to the lead character’s design. Gone were the cartoon-ish big eyes, big shoes and overall cuteness. They made him look more “human”, and the end result was not pretty. After the trailer landed with a thud, the studio decided to pull the film from its original November release date, and re-design the character and essentially redo the film… at least the CGI Sonic parts. Today we get our first look at that adjustment, and it looks considerably better. Originally I asked the question, who is this for? Kids? Do kids like Jim Carrey, or even know who he is? I’m sure someone at Paramount Pictures thought Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic was inspired casting, but in the trailer it just sounds bland and awkward, like a voice you’d hear in any TV commercial. You’ve got poor James Marsden and Tika Sumpter in there trying their best, but this mostly feels like a late-90s or early 2000s kind of family film. The newer trailer IS better than what we originally saw, but it still feels a bit off somehow. Check it out for yourself and tell us in the comments below.
Based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG tells the story of the world’s speediest hedgehog as he embraces his new home on Earth. In this live-action adventure comedy, Sonic and his new best friend Tom (James Marsden) team up to defend the planet from the evil genius Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) and his plans for world domination. The family-friendly film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
