BIRDS OF PREY (AND THE FANTABULOUS EMANCIPATION OF ONE HARLEY QUINN) full trailer hits the web

If you didn’t get enough of Margot Robbie as “Harley Quinn” in SUICIDE SQUAD, not to worry, you’ll soon see her and some other Batman-themed DC Comics characters in BIRDS OF PREY (AND THE FANTABULOUS EMANCIPATION OF ONE HARLEY QUINN) – yes, that is the title, though we’re wondering if it’s likely to be shortened to just BIRDS OF PREY or at least something shorter before release. The film is directed by Cathy Yan with a screenplay by Christina Hodson. And for those curious, it is set in Gotham City. In addition to Robbie, the movie stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Rosie Perez as Detective Renee Montoya, Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain (in the comics she eventually becomes Batgirl), Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz, and Ewan McGregor as Black Mask. Warner Bros. has released a new full trailer which you can see below. I’m still a little conflicted on this, as while I liked Robbie as Harley in SUICIDE SQUAD, I felt like a little of the character went a long way. And the Birds of Prey comic centered more around Black Canary, Huntress and Oracle (Commissioner Gordon’s daughter Barbra, who was shot and crippled by The Joker… nowhere to be seen here). Harley was always more of a Batman villain, so combining these characters and her seems a little forced, but maybe it will work. The characters of Zsasz and Black Mask are also traditionally more Batman villains, but seeing as how this is set in Gotham, I guess that works.

Since the events of Suicide Squad, Batman has disappeared, leaving Gotham City unprotected from crime, and Harley Quinn has left the Joker. When Cassandra Cain, a young girl, comes across a diamond belonging to crime lord Black Mask, Harley joins forces with Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya to help protect her.
