It’s official, Robert Pattinson IS the new Batman, and Matt Reeves is planning a new trilogy

Depending on your feelings toward him as an actor, this will either be very exciting or very devastating news, but after weeks of rumors and speculation, Robert Pattinson has indeed won the role of Batman in director Matt Reeves’ THE BATMAN. Variety is confirming that Pattinson took the part and that Warner Bros. has closed the deal on his casting.  Production is supposed to begin sometime this summer, and the movie is set to be released on June 25, 2021.

Reeves is the man behind DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES and WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES, and took over directing duties on the new solo Bat-film two years ago when Ben Affleck (playing Batman at the time) decided not to helm the reboot.  In a report today on Deadline, it’s being said this new movie will be the first of trilogy of films, which is understandable.  It’s been rumored this reboot could be set in the 1990s, perhaps a re-imagining of Bruce Wayne’s early years as Batman.  The Christopher Nolan trilogy with Christian Bale started with BATMAN BEGINS, and also showed us the characters first days as Batman.  Interesting to note that Pattinson’s next movie will be with Chris Nolan (called TENET), opening summer of next year.  Pattinson is perhaps best known for playing Edward Cullen, the vampire love interest in the TWILIGHT movie franchise, but has done 14 movies since the first TWILIGHT, and has three more in post production.  The news of his potential casting drew ire from the internet, as many people aren’t familiar with his non-TWILIGHT work, much of which is quite impressive.  And the mention of Nolan above is important, since the respected director is very selective about who he works with.  It will be interesting to see how THE BATMAN develops from here, but at least now we know who is in the lead.  Do you think this could be a smart movie for the studio?  Let us know in the comments.
