STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER – Episode IX’s Trailer Begins The End Of The Saga

Let’s first get to why you’re here. Just let this wash over you for a few plays.

I’m a fan of a lot of different things. There’s people who are fans of one thing to the exclusion of others — SUPERNATURAL, FIREFLY, HARRY POTTER, what have you. I like a lot of these things in varying degrees. My first fandom love was SPACE: 1999 and STAR TREK, and watched them into perpetuity.

Then came STAR WARS.

George Lucas’ lil’ space opera soft-landed directly onto my cerebellum for a lot of reasons. I was seven-years-old, and starting to figure out what I really liked as opposed to shiny, loud things on the screen. I wanted to know HOW they made it – optical effects, makeup, sound, scriptwriting, acting, all of it. (I went into further detail with¬†Robert Philpot¬†back when THE FORCE AWAKENS came out.)

Unlike some people who feel like the Prequels “ruined their childhood,” I can find things to enjoy in CLONES and SITH. (If I never watch THE PHANTOM MENACE again, I’ll be happy… but I’ll have to watch it again eventually.)

The buildup and release for a new STAR WARS trailer holds a ***really*** special place in my heart. I don’t know what any of the set pieces mean. What’s that creature riding in the swamps of Naboo? Where is that Star Destroyer lying buried in the sand from? Does Rey want to kill Kylo Ren, or just give his TIE a new moon roof?

That’s why I am glad Lucasfilm is dialing back the production of the films after the release of THE RISE OF SKYWALKER. A new STAR WARS film every year feels like it takes that “special”-ness away from it. I didn’t have the same reaction to the SOLO and ROGUE ONE trailers than I did with the first glimpses at THE FORCE AWAKENS, or THE LAST JEDI. This is the right move.

I held a little impromptu event in our break room to watch the Celebration livestream at work this morning, and about a dozen folks stepped in to get that warm, space cadet glow.

For that one hour, I was seven again.

STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER releases in theaters on December 20, 2019. See you there.
