When PREDATOR hit theaters in 1987, is became an instant Sci-Fi classic, one in which the monster actually managed to upstage the blockbuster star – in this case Arnold Schwarzenegger. PREDATOR 2 was a fun sequel, bringing the alien hunters into downtown Los Angeles, and we’ve had a few ALIEN VS. PREDATOR films, not to mention Robert Rodriguez’s attempt at a revival in PREDATORS. But none of the follow-ups seemed to effectively capture the charm and excitement of the original, no matter how hard they tried. Now, the man who gave us LETHAL WEAPON, KISS KISS BANG BANG and IRON MAN 3, the one an only Shane Black, is attempting to breathe new life into the franchise with THE PREDATOR. The cast includes Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Munn, Sterling K. Brown, Alfie Allen, Thomas Jane, Augusto Aguilera, Jake Busey, and Yvonne Strahovski. But more important than all that is that this film reunites Shane Black with Fred Dekker, co-writing the screenplay for this outing. Why is that important? Back in 1987, the same year Black penned the first LETHAL WEAPON, he and Dekker also co-wrote a little classic called THE MONSTER SQUAD, which Dekker at the time also directed. Now, in a fun sort of switcheroo, Black is the director for a screenplay they co-wrote… perhaps this is a full circle scenario, but you can’t help loving the nostalgia of it all. The teaser trailer below is just that, showing very little of the Predators and very little of the actual story, but I have faith in Shane Black, I’m sure he’ll deliver an entertaining cinematic ride. Tell us your thoughts in the comments. Are you ready for some more Predator action?
From the outer reaches of space to the small-town streets of suburbia, the hunt comes home in Shane Black’s explosive reinvention of the Predator series. Now, the universe’s most lethal hunters are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before, having genetically upgraded themselves with DNA from other species. When a young boy accidentally triggers their return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and a disgruntled science teacher can prevent the end of the human race.
