With big screen adaptations of WONDER WOMAN and JUSTICE LEAGUE on the horizon, Warner Bros. isn’t slowing down when it comes to their DC Comics adaptations hitting the big screen. Today we learn through Deadline new details about their Green Lantern movie, which will very likely ignore the previous attempt that starred Ryan Reynolds. GREEN LANTERN CORPS will focus on Hal Jordan and John Stewart working together in what is described as a “LETHAL WEAPON in space” story. David Goyer and Justin Rhodes will handle the screenplay with Goyer producing, and Geoff Johns and Jon Berg executive producing. Fans of Christopher Nolan’s THE DARK KNIGHT trilogy may recognize Goyer’s name from his work on those movies, and he also worked on Zack Snyder’s MAN OF STEEL and BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE. Rhodes wrote and directed CONTRACT KILLERS and penned the Jason Biggs comedy GRASSROOTS. The real key to making this work is Geoff Johns, who is easily one of the best writers in comics, and started with a film background – he used to work with Richard Donner! Johns is now in charge of DC movies, and hopefully can find a way to bring the Green Lantern universe to the big screen the right way.

As for the Green Lantern Corps, they’re sort of like space cops that guard various regions of outer space, so it’s easy to imagine the two buddy cops in that scenario. There’s also a LOT of characters to work with, and we’ve yet to see a live action Guy Gardner, the most wacky of the Corps. The report notes there’s no mention of whether or not Ryan Reynolds will be approached to reprise the role of Hal Jordan, but with Deadpool being all the rage, we’re guessing it’s not gonna happen. Tyrese Gibson has campaigned to play John Stewart, so maybe he’ll get his wish. Are you excited about GREEN LANTERN CORPS? Let us know in the comments. It’s currently scheduled to hit theaters July 24, 2020.
