Peter Berg’s excellent DEEPWATER HORIZON just hit theaters a little over a month ago, but it’s only one of two U.S. tragedy dramas he’s releasing this year, and both happen to star Mark Wahlberg. This December sees the release of PATRIOTS DAY, which covers the events of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing attack and the community coming together to get through it. In the movie Walhberg portrays Sergeant Tommy Saunders of the Boston Police Department, and the supporting cast includes J.K. Simmons, John Goodman, Kevin Bacon, Melissa Benoist and Michelle Monaghan. The first trailer didn’t actually show the chaos, but rather built the emotional and haunting tone of the subject matter, set to “America the Beautiful” – I actually got a little misty-eyed watching it, I’m not afraid to say. This new trailer is ever more emotionally effective and powerful, and does show some of the more extreme aspects of the story. Watch it below and tell us your thoughts in the comments.

In the aftermath of an unspeakable attack, Police Sergeant Tommy Saunders (Mark Wahlberg) joins courageous survivors, first responders and investigators in a race against the clock to hunt down the bombers before they strike again. Weaving together the stories of Special Agent Richard DesLauriers (Kevin Bacon), Police Commissioner Ed Davis (John Goodman), Sergeant Jeffrey Pugliese (J.K. Simmons) and nurse Carol Saunders (Michelle Monaghan) this visceral and unflinching chronicle captures the suspense of one of the most sophisticated manhunts in law enforcement history and celebrates the strength of the people of Boston.

PATRIOTS DAY opens in L.A. and New York on December 21, 2016 – opens wide January 13, 2017
