In 2014 we saw the release of Ridley Scott’s EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS, a sort of sleek re-telling of the classic Moses and Ramses story. This year we get a new take on the Egyptian Gods mythos with GODS OF EGYPT. Directed by Alex Proyas (DARK CITY, THE CROW), this colorful vision stars Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Brenton Thwaites, Chadwick Boseman, Elodie Yung, Courtney Eaton, Gerard Butler and Geoffrey Rush. We imagine there will be some criticism here, not just toward the frequently brought up “whitewashing” in casting of Egyptian characters, but also in the almost video game-like look of the film. I typically love the work of Proyas, so I’m trying to stay positive, but man oh man is this like sugar overdose for your eyes. What’s most interesting is how colorful and bright this is, as Proyas typically tells stories with dark and bleak colors. I’m guess since Ridley Scott’s film chose a gray-ish and gold motif, Proyas may have been forced to go the opposite way. Born and raised in Dallas, Mark has been a movie critic since 1994, with reviews featured in print, radio and National TV. From 2002 until 2015 he managed the Dallas Comic Con, Sci-Fi Expo and Fan Days events in the DFW area. He currently catalogs rare comic books and movie memorabilia for Heritage Auctions, and runs the Dallas Comic Show conventions, but remains an avid moviegoer and cinema buff.
