While some would call this a sort of “fan film” from a former franchise star, STAR TREK: RENEGADES deserves a better title than that. Co-starring and directed by Tim Russ (who played Tuvok on STAR TREK: VOYAGER), the film features an impressive cast that includes Adrienne Wilkinson (XENA) as Captain Lexxa Singh, Walter Koenig as Admiral Chekov, Sean Young (BLADE RUNNER), Gary Graham (STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE), Edward Furlong (TERMINATOR 2, PET CEMETERY), Richerd Herd as Admiral Paris (STAR TREK: VOYAGER alum), Manu Intiraymi as Icheb (another STAR TREK: VOYAGER alum), Corin Nemec (STARGATE SG-1), Robert Picardo as Dr. Lewis Zimmerman… and that’s just the short list, you’ll see many other recognizable faces here. We’ve seen these sorts of passion projects before, but RENEGADES looks pretty good, boasting nice special effects and ship battles, and actors that look like they’re really into the material. The simple fact that it has Koenig reprising his role as a much older Chekov is enough to make me interested, but in many ways this looks like it could easily be a new TREK series. It also smartly has a darker and more gritty look than we’re used to from the franchise, which is likely done to appeal to fans of shows like FIREFLY or the new BATTLESTAR GALACTICA… either way, it’s a smart touch.
