Brad Bird has given us some wonderful films through the years. THE IRON GIANT, THE INCREDIBLES, RATATOUILLE and MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL have all been very satisfying cinematic experiences. I’ve been a fan of his since his AMAZING STORIES segment “The Family Dog.” Many have wondered if we’d ever get a sequel to THE INCREDIBLES, and now it looks like we just might. Bird is finishing up promotional obligations for TOMORROWLAND, but has already dropped some rather awesome news about what lies ahead. While speaking to Collider, Bird had the following to say about a sequel for the Pixar favorite:
“Oh yeah I have pages, a bunch of pages. I had a lot of ideas for the original Incredibles that I didn’t get a chance to use, that I like. I have ideas that I wanted to pursue a little bit and there wasn’t enough time in Incredibles. There are new ideas I have, and I think there are enough of those together to make an interesting movie. I’m just focusing on getting Tomorrowland out into the world and playing with the Incredibles sandbox again.”
When asked specifically if THE INCREDIBLES 2 would be his next film, the response was “Yeah it feels like it to me, yeah.” Now before you get too excited, keep in mind films like this take time to get going, and Pixar already has release dates set for projects all the way through 2017, so it could be 2018 before we see a second installment on the big screen. The bigger question is whether or not Bird will just write or write and direct the film, as it’s entirely possible the director chair could go to someone else. When asked about the possibility of him directing a STAR WARS movie for Disney and Lucasfilm, Bird noted:
“Well Kathy and I have discussed the possibility of—I mean she’s basically saying this is a very large sandbox and other people can play in it. I was particularly attracted to the idea of picking up and—J.J. got very excited about the notion of shaping the next trilogy, and that idea was interesting to me too. But I kind of—I’m writing a sequel to The Incredibles and I can’t think too much farther beyond that. I have other things I want to do as well.”
That last part could be an indication that Brad just wants to write THE INCREDIBLES 2 and not direct, perhaps directing something else in the meantime, but with the long development process it’s entirely possible he could helm another film until it was time to kick things into gear on the Pixar sequel. Time will tell. Are you excited about seeing the superhero family return to the big screen? Tell us in the comments below.
