At this year’s USA Film Festival, I closed things out by watching Bill Condon’s MR. HOLMES, with actor Hiroyuki Sanada in attendance no less. The film reunites Condon with GODS AND MONSTERS star Ian McKellen, who brilliantly plays an aging Sherlock Holmes in the new film. The story deals with Holmes solving a personal mystery, the effects of old age, and his relationship with the mother and son tasked with looking after him. While not exactly an exciting film, it’s masterfully put together and superbly acted, as one would expect from this cast. McKellen shares the screen with Sanada, Laura Linney, and Milo Parker. Check out the new trailer below and see what you think.

MR. HOLMES is a new twist on the world’s most famous detective. 1947, an aging Sherlock Holmes returns from a journey to Japan, where, in search of a rare plant with powerful restorative qualities, he has witnessed the devastation of nuclear warfare. Now, in his remote seaside farmhouse, Holmes faces the end of his days tending to his bees, with only the company of his housekeeper and her young son, Roger. Grappling with the diminishing powers of his mind, Holmes comes to rely upon the boy as he revisits the circumstances of the unsolved case that forced him into retirement, and searches for answers to the mysteries of life and love – before it’s too late.

MR. HOLMES will open in theaters July 17, 2015
