Just as the retro-styled spy thriller KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE is about to hit theaters, we’re treated to a trailer for the big screen reboot of THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. – based on the cult classic television show that sadly very few remember now. The original TV series aired in the big spy craze of the 1960’s, pairing an American and Russian spy together. In the film Henry Cavill plays the leading man Napoleon Solo (originally played on TV by Robert Vaughn) and Armie Hammer stars as Illya Kuryakin (originally played by David McCallum on the series). Guy Ritchie is director here, giving the proceedings a slick look and feel. Ritchie also helmed the SHERLOCK HOLMES movies, and this definitely has a similar style. Check out the first trailer and see what you think. The cast also includes Alicia Vikander, Hugh Grant, Jared Harris and Elizabeth Debicki. We haven’t heard much about it so far, though there were rumors a test screening several months back did not go over well. Hopefully the studio has had time to polish it, and bring out the best qualities. We’ll say this, the teaser looks pretty fun.
Henry Cavill (“Man of Steel”) stars as Napoleon Solo opposite Armie Hammer (“The Social Network”) as Illya Kuryakin in director Guy Ritchie’s “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,” a fresh take on the hugely popular 1960s television series.
Set against the backdrop of the early 1960s, at the height of the Cold War, “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” centers on CIA agent Solo and KGB agent Kuryakin. Forced to put aside longstanding hostilities, the two team up on a joint mission to stop a mysterious international criminal organization, which is bent on destabilizing the fragile balance of power through the proliferation of nuclear weapons and technology. The duo’s only lead is the daughter of a vanished German scientist, who is the key to infiltrating the criminal organization, and they must race against time to find him and prevent a worldwide catastrophe.
Ok. Henry looks great. I hope Armie can sustain the Russian accent. Film looks good and fun, BUT… This IS The Man From U. N. C. L. E. !!! And we don’t even get a ‘tease’ of the original Theme?!!!! Whilst Man’s theme isn’t on Bond or M:I level it’s still right up there. They better open this movie with the theme and logo. Otherwise why call this UNCLE?
