Kevin Macdonald is a director to keep an eye on, even if his theatrical credits aren’t as well known as most big name filmmakers you’ve heard of. He’s perhaps best known for THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND (for which he won a Bafta and British Independent Film Award), but he’s also an Oscar winner for his documentary ONE DAY IN SEPTEMBER. In fact Kevin’s directing credits are mostly comprised of documentary works, though he’s proven himself to be a strong force behind the camera for narrative features as well. His newest effort is BLACK SEA, which follows a group of men using a Russian submarine to secretly attempt retrieval of nazi gold buried at the bottom of the sea in a U-boat. Starring Jude Law, Ben Mendelsohn and Scoot McNairy, it also features some genuine Russian actors, adding a layer of authenticity to the exciting storyline. It’s exactly the kind of movie I love, using a story that forces two very different groups of people to work together under incredibly tense conditions, and seeing how the thrill of the hunt can also corrupt important decisions. It’s a sort of heist movie with a nice mix of action, drama, and even a little bit of horror… of course any film that spends a majority of its time in the mysterious depths of the ocean always has the potential to be scary. I had a chance to sit down with Kevin during his recent press stop in Dallas, and you can check out that interview below. Bigfanboy.com also hosted his Q&A, and it was my great pleasure to see our own Jimmy Cassidy host it – his first Q&A gig! Jimmy is a former Marine, and did a great job discussing the project with Kevin, along with fielding questions from the audience. So I guess you could say the video below is my follow-up to what Jimmy started. Check out the film as well and let us know what you think. My thanks to Grady May as well for editing the video below.
