As folks are still in shock over the events surrounding the Seth Rogen and James Franco comedy THE INTERVIEW, we’ve got a trailer for a new Franco film to show ya… only this is about as far as you can get from being a comedy. Jonah Hill and Franco star in TRUE STORY, based on the real life New York Times reporter Michael Finkel and Christian Longo, the latter being accused of murdering his entire family. The catch is he hid using Finkel’s name and identity. When authorities caught up with Longo, and Finkel became aware of his name being used, the two men met for a prison interview. Here’s the first poster for the film:
This all really happened too, with Finkel publishing a 2006 recount of their meeting. There’s an interesting dichotemy here as well, with Longo going to jail for possibly committing the worst crime possible, and Finkel now a disgraced reporter cut from one of the most prestigious publications in the world. The trailer below looks like a real opportunity for Hill to prove himself in a dramatic role. He was good in both MONEYBALL and THE WOLF OF WALL STREET, but both of those roles were still somewhat comedic… this is very much not, and certainly a far cry from THIS IS THE END, their last big screen pairing together. It’s directed by Rupert Goold, and also stars Felicity Jones, Ethan Suplee and Gretchen Mol. The world premiere of TRUE STORY will be held at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2015, and it’s scheduled for a theatrical release in April. Take a look at the trailer and tell us your thoughts in the comments.
