Been waiting for another film from director Paul Thomas Anderson? His newest is INHERENT VICE, based on the novel by Thomas Pynchon. Joaquin Phoenix heads an all-star cast that includes Josh Brolin, Martin Short, Reese Witherspoon, Eric Roberts, Sasha Pieterse, Joanna Newsom, Michael K. Williams, Jena Malone, Owen Wilson, Maya Rudolph and Benecio Del Toro… whew! Imagine a detective noir story done in the style of THE BIG LEBOWSKI – well, that’s the vibe most are getting here. I’m still writing my review, not that I want to spoil it, but I’ll just say the finished film isn’t quite as satisfying of fun as the trailers would lead us to believe. What’s most interesting about this new trailer is it contains a few alternate shots of key scenes in the film, like Phoenix getting hit on the head (which is shown from a reverse angle in the movie), or a few other moments that were obviously shot in different ways than what ended up in the final edit. These are definitely some of the best trailers to come out of 2014. Check the new one out for yourself and see if you agree, then let us know your thoughts in the comments.
“Inherent Vice” is the seventh feature from Paul Thomas Anderson and the first film adaption of a Thomas Pynchon novel. When P.I. Doc Sportello’s ex-old lady shows up with a story about her current billionaire land developer boyfriend and a plot by his wife and her boyfriend to kidnap that billionaire and throw him in a looney bin… well, easy for her to say. It’s the tail end of the `60s, paranoia is running the day and Doc knows that “love” is one of those words going around, like “trip” or “groovy,” that’s way too overused–except this one usually leads to trouble. With a cast of characters that includes surfers, hustlers, dopers and rockers, a murderous loan shark, LAPD Detectives, a tenor sax player working undercover and a mysterious entity known as the Golden Fang, which may only be a tax dodge set up by some dentists… Part surf noir, part psychedelic romp–all Thomas Pynchon.
