One of the films to watch for this weekend is director Dan Gilroy’s NIGHTCRAWLER. Showcasing a career-defining performance from a gaunt Jake Gyllenhaal, the dark take on journalism also features Rene Russo and Bill Paxton, and is already making a lot of critic must-see lists. Check out the new red band trailer below, which features some of the more spirited review quotes for to be posted for the film. It worries me sometimes when trailers push quotes like this, as in this day of internet scrutiny it runs the risk of setting expectations too high, or at times makes people want to seek out faults when they don’t need to… just to go against the grain. Judge for yourself this Friday when NIGHTCRAWLER hits theaters.

Nightcrawler is a pulse-pounding thriller set in the nocturnal underbelly of contemporary Los Angeles. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Lou Bloom, a driven young man desperate for work who discovers the high-speed world of L.A. crime journalism. Finding a group of freelance camera crews who film crashes, fires, murder and other mayhem, Lou muscles into the cut-throat, dangerous realm of nightcrawling — where each police siren wail equals a possible windfall and victims are converted into dollars and cents. Aided by Rene Russo as Nina, a veteran of the blood-sport that is local TV news, Lou blurs the line between observer and participant to become the star of his own story.

NIGHTCRAWLER opens October 31, 2014
