Back in February of this year Troy Duffy got fans excited when he Tweeted a page from the script for a third outing of THE BOONDOCK SAINTS. Since then we’ve not heard or seen much about it, but not a day goes by that hardcore fans of the franchise don’t ask where the third installment is. Now we have some new info in the form of both a title and plot description, direct from Duffy himself, thanks to him answering question on the official Facebook page. He’s stated the title of the new film will be THE BOONDOCK SAINTS 3: LEGION as the movie is said to show legions of people following in the footsteps of the infamous Irish brothers and becoming vigilantes.

THE BOONDOCK SAINTS II: ALL SAINTS DAY came out in 2009, and since then the two stars of the franchise have gone on to many other projects. Sean Patrick Flanery has starred in DEXTER, THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS and SAW 3D: THE FINAL CHAPTER, while Norman Reedus has become a geek god playing Daryl Dixon on THE WALKING DEAD. Both actors have repeatedly said they would return for a third film in a heartbeat, and the fandom for the franchise has stayed strong thanks to them making frequent appearances at pop culture conventions around the world. In the second film the story ended with the brothers in prison. and Duffy noted that will lead to them having even more notoriety as a result. He also noted the new outing would show flashbacks to the very first crime of The MacManus Brothers. Among the things said, Troy wants to recapture the “boots on the ground” feel of the 1999 movie that started it all, and also took blame for the delay in getting a third film made, noting “It’s my fault. It’s taken awhile… it’s cause I want to get it right.”

Back in February, we speculated that if this is to be the last movie in a trilogy, perhaps Connor and Murphy MacManus die at the end. In some ways that might be the most fitting way to close out the franchise. What are your thoughts? Are you ready for The MacManus brothers to fight crime one more time? We’ll keep tabs on this and see if anything new pops up. How do you feel about the possibility of a third BOONDOCK film? Tell us in the comments.
