Back in May we announced that Lionsgate and Saban were going to be producing a new POWER RANGERS movie, and now we have an official release date for that project. Regardless of whether or not you grew up watching MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS on television or not, there’s no denying the popular kid show has seen a major resurgence of fandom in recent years. Several of the stars have appeared at pop culture conventions around the world, drawing huge lines of enthusiastic fans. With the franchise seeing so much retroactive love, it’s only natural that now would be a good time for Hollywood to think about rebooting things.

POWER RANGERS will open on July 22, 2016 in wide release, from Lionsgate.
Writers: Ashley Miller, Zack Stentz
Producers: Haim Saban, Brian Casentini, Allison Shearmur and Roberto Orci
Production Company: Saban Brands
Genre: Action, Family
Country of Origin: USA
Language: English

Synopsis: From a story by Executive Producer Roberto Orci (TRANSFORMERS, STAR TREK, AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2) and screenwriters Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller (X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, THOR) comes a modern reinvention of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a group of ordinary high school kids who find themselves infused with extraterrestrial powers and must harness those powers as a team to save the world.

No word yet on whether or not we can expect some of the classic actors to participate, though that would definitely be a smart move. With a big name like Orci producing, and a screenwriting team that has hits like Marvel’s THOR and X-MEN: FIRST CLASS under their belts, this could end up being big stuff. Tell us your thoughts in the comments. Are you excited at the idea of a new and improved take on the POWER RANGERS mythology?
