Get those Oscar plaques ready, we’ve got a feeling UNBROKEN is a solid contender. If you’re not familiar with Angelina Jolie’s second directorial effort (her first was the little-seen IN THE LAND OF BLOOD AND HONEY), it hits this Christmas season and has all the ingredients of an Academy Award darling. It’s based on the real life Louis Zamperini (played in the film by Jack O’Connell) and adapted from the book by Laura Hillenbrand (who also wrote SEABISCUIT), though it should definitely be noted that Joel and Ethan Coen did work on the screenplay. Zamperini was an Olympic victor who served in World War II, and ended up a prisoner in a Japanese camp. In addition to O’Connell, the film stars Domhnall Gleeson, Takamasa Ishihara, Garrett Hedlund, and Finn Wittrock. Take a look at the trailer and tell us your thoughts in the comments below.

Academy Award® winner Angelina Jolie directs and produces Unbroken, an epic drama that follows the incredible life of Olympian and war hero Louis “Louie” Zamperini (Jack O’Connell) who, along with two other crewmen, survived in a raft for 47 days after a near-fatal plane crash in WWII—only to be caught by the Japanese Navy and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp. Adapted from Laura Hillenbrand’s (“Seabiscuit: An American Legend”) enormously popular book, Unbroken brings to the big screen Zamperini’s unbelievable and inspiring true story about the resilient power of the human spirit.

UNBROKEN opens December 25, 2014
