In an interview with Ain’t It Cool News, director Louis Leterrier dropped a bit of interesting news regarding THE AVENGERS movie. Leterrier has already been very vocal about wanting to return to doing Marvel movie projects, and is apparently still under contract for at least one more Marvel film. Though it looks unlikely that Edward Norton would do THE INCREDIBLE HULK 2, he didn’t seem to rule out an appearance in THE AVENGERS movies. While talking about CLASH OF THE TITANS, Leterrier told AICN the following:
“I am on the shortlist, but I’m at the bottom of the shortlist, I’m sure. (Laughs) I don’t know who the other guys are, but I have a great relationship with [Marvel], and I’ve been very vocal to them and everyone else that I am the one to direct it. I loved my time at Marvel. I loved those guys. They’re fantastic. Kevin is such a passionate boss; he gets his hands dirty. It’s a universe I want to keep exploring. I was frustrated with [THE INCREDIBLE HULK]. It was like, “That’s it? Only one superhero? Can I do more???” We’ll see. Time will tell.”
Now here’s something interesting I can add to this. It was rumored once before that Matthew Vaughn (KICK-ASS) was in the running to helm THE AVENGERS, and more recently there has been speculation it could go to either Joe Johnston or Kenneth Branagh, both of whom are directing major Marvel films (Johnston with THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA and Branagh with THOR). Jon Favreau (despite his amazing success with IRON MAN) has said he’ll only produce and not direct, so his name can be removed from the potentials. But get this, when I was covering the red carpet for KICK-ASS during the South By Southwest Film Festival, director Matthew Vaughn let it slip that his next film was going to be “a comic book film”, but that he couldn’t talk about it, for risk of jinxing it. Hmmm… what could that mean? If it was THE AVENGERS he was talking about, that’s easily still a way down the road, but if it’s something else… well, what could it be?
