Director José Padilha’s ROBOCOP reboot has met with mixed reactions so far, mostly based on spy photos while they were shooting, and leaving many to wonder what the end result would look and feel like. Let’s face it, ROBOCOP (1987) isn’t a movie that really needs a remake, as the original is still so good and actually holds up quite well. But Hollywood is in the reboot and sequel business right now, so he’s the newest result. Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) is playing Alex Murphy/Robocop in this one, and the supporting cast is pretty stellar, including Michael Keaton, Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman, Jackie Earle Haley, Jay Baruchel, Abbie Cornish and more… apparently original ROBOCOP star Miguel Ferrer is in there somewhere playing a different character, though I couldn’t spot him anywhere in the trailer. Check it out below and tell us your thoughts. I have to admit, as much as I adore the original, this looks pretty cool so far.
In RoboCop, the year is 2028 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Overseas, their drones have been used by the military for years – and it’s meant billions for OmniCorp’s bottom line. Now OmniCorp wants to bring their controversial technology to the home front, and they see a golden opportunity to do it. When Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) – a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit – is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp sees their chance for a part-man, part-robot police officer. OmniCorp envisions a RoboCop in every city and even more billions for their shareholders, but they never counted on one thing: there is still a man inside the machine pursuing justice.
I love the concept of RoboCop, though not always the execution, especially in the first two films. As such, I’ve been looking forward to this for over a year, and it looks like it won’t disappoint. It seems like Alex “dies” due to a car bomb this time, instead of being shot to death, though that could be an editing ploy in the trailer. I really hope it lives up to the hype, unlike the Mandarin in “Iron Man 3”.
