When Joss Whedon, a man who was mostly known for his work on television, turned in one of the biggest and most-successful comic book movies of all time, it’s only natural he’d have a little say with what Marvel did next. So what’s the natural next step? Back to TV. Clark Gregg, who was loved by fans as the ill-fated Agent Phil Coulson in all the Marvel movies until his apparent demise in THE AVENGERS, headlines a new series about the covert government sector known as S.H.I.E.L.D. – the organization Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) runs. Whedon directed the pilot, which also features Ming-Na Wen, Iain De Caestecker, Brett Dalton, Elizabeth Henstridge, and Chloe Bennett. I’m not sure how much they could do in a weekly series that would even come close to what fans saw in THE AVENGERS, but I trust in Joss, and primetime TV could use a new comic book-flavored show. Check out the promotional photo above and 30-second video promo below, and tell us your thoughts in the comments.

SYNOPSIS: Clark Gregg reprises his role of Agent Phil Coulson from Marvel’s feature films as he assembles a small, highly select group of Agents from the worldwide law-enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Together they investigate the new, the strange, and the unknown across the globe, protecting the ordinary from the extraordinary. Coulson’s team consists of Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), highly trained in combat and espionage, Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) expert pilot and martial artist, Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker); brilliant engineer and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) genius bio-chemist. Joining them on their journey into mystery is new recruit and computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet). From Executive Producers Joss Whedon (“Marvel’s The Avengers,” ”Buffy the Vampire Slayer”); Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” pilot co-writers (“Dollhouse,” “Dr.Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog”); Jeffrey Bell (“Angel,” “Alias”); and Jeph Loeb (“Smallville”) comes Marvel’s first TV series. “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television.
