Bigfanboy.com exclusive – Scott Sanders talks about the BLACK DYNAMITE animated series

Last Thursday night on the Bigfanboy Livecast, BLACK DYNAMITE director/co-writer Scott Sanders joined us as a special guest, and talked in depth about making what was easily one of the coolest movies of 2009.  Incidentally, it’s out on DVD and Blu-ray this week, and you simply must own this film.  See links below to buy it online.  During the podcast conversation/interview, Scott touched a bit on the BLACK DYNAMITE animated series, which is apparently moving forward. Sanders mentioned that Carl Jones (THE BOONDOCKS) is executive producing the show for Cartoon Network. Here’s what he had to say…

Mark Walters: “Is it going to follow very closely to the movie, or is it going to kind of be its own entity? Can you tell us a little bit more about that?”

Scott Sanders: “Um, yeah, it’s kind of going to be its own entity. I think it’s sort of our ‘wilder’ Black Dynamite ideas that probably didn’t work in the live action realm, which is kind of hard to believe given the end of the film. (laughs) But yeah, we have some pretty crazy ideas that we wanted to do, that will be really fun to explore in the cartoon world.”

Mark Walters: “Will it be done in the style of the animation that you used in the movie?”

Scott Sanders: “Um… somewhat. Yeah somewhat, we’re actually using the same team, Six Point Harness, which did a great job. We’re gonna be working with them, but I think it’s going to have a slightly different look.”

So there you have it, BLACK DYNAMITE gets animated, and on Cartoon Network no less! I think this could be really great, especially if they follow the sensibilities of the 1970’s, and maybe even translate that into 1970’s style animation, making fun of shows like FAT ALBERT or SCOOBY-DOO. Think about it, all the Hanna-Barbera stuff from the old days, it has it’s own look and feel, and it’s ripe for spoofing, especially with this type of character. We’ll keep you updated as we learn more. To listen to the entire interview, click here, or right-click and save the MP3 – Scott is brought on about 15 minutes into the show.
