Rumor – is Viggo Mortensen Marvel’s Doctor Strange? Appearing first in THOR 2? Other Marvel movie rumors…

Occasionally you hear Hollywood rumors you just really, really want to be true. This is definitely one of those times. It’s no secret that Marvel Studios is considering a Doctor Strange movie, and with THE AVENGERS 2 being an inevitable entry on their film slate, they need to introduce a few new heroes first. We’ve already got Edgar Wright’s ANT-MAN on the way, and GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY (which likely won’t play into an AVENGERS sequel), but outside of THOR 2: THE DARK WORLD and CAPTAIN AMERICA 2: THE WINTER SOLDIER in the next few years there’s not a whole lot on the schedule in the way of new characters. Now there’s rumor coming from (of all places) Twitter, by way of a fella named Roger Wardell.  At first glance this gentleman’s account may not look like much, but he frequently posts news about Marvel films… and he’s frequently right, while being ahead of the game on many internet news sites.  On August 19 he posted:

Inside News: Marvel is negotiations with Viggo Mortensen for an unspecified role in one of their Phase 2 films.

Then on August 22 he posts:

Inside News: There’s something “Strange” about Thor: The Dark World

Finally on September 2 he posted:

Inside News: Expect some casting news very soon!

Those are just a few of the many “Inside News” Tweets from Mr. Wardell, but just looking at those, it’s possible to hypothesize that if a leading man like Viggo Mortensen is meeting with Marvel, and if Doctor Strange is to appear in THOR 2: THE DARK WORLD, and if there’s a big casting announcement about to be made… perhaps Viggo is going to be Doctor Strange.  Granted, this is all speculation, hence the title of “Rumor” on this post, but I will say Mortensen would be a cool choice for The Master of the Mystic Arts.  Can you imagine him wearing that elaborate mystical outfit and blasting out mystic power?  In a THOR movie no less?  Then imagine him joining The Avengers for a big battle.  It’s almost too much awesomeness to process.

But who is Roger Wardell, and how does he know so much?  Could it be he’s an industry insider?  Someone who works for Marvel dropping insider info just for fun?  How does he know this stuff before anyone else?  Hard to say, but as previously mentioned, a lot of the time he’s right.  Just for grins, some of his other Tweets say things like:

Inside News: Every villain answers to somebody, even the Winter Soldier. Who better to answer to than a Baron?

That would be Baron Wolfgang von Strucker from the Captain America comic storyline.

Inside News: Marvel Studios has a Black Panther script, but they are having doubts whether or not if the character could hold his own film.

There has been talk that Marvel is interested in doing a BLACK PANTHER movie, and Wardell also Tweeted the following a few days prior to the above post:

Inside News: Aldis Hodge is currently on Marvel’s radar.

Aldis Hodge is perhaps best known for the series LEVERAGE, and being a young and rather fit African American actor, he could make a nice fresh face to take on the role of T’Challa aka “Black Panther.”

I’m always hesitant to post stuff like this without concrete facts, but it’s also kind of fun to imagine someone like Viggo taking on such an iconic character.  And if we’re being brutally honest here, Mortensen hasn’t had a “hit” film since his days on THE LORD OF THE RINGS movies.  I liked A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE and EASTERN PROMISES a lot, and THE ROAD is an impressive performance, but none of those films even made their budget back domestically.  Playing Doctor Strange could be the box office shot in the arm Viggo needs, or at least wants.  Heck, let his frequent collaborator David Cronenberg direct it!  Now that could get interesting.  Tell us your thoughts in the comments.
