RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK and TEMPLE OF DOOM get 70mm conversions in IMAX theaters in September

We do love us some Indiana Jones here at Bigfanboy.com, and cinema lovers will be in heaven next month when Paramount re-releases both RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK and INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM in IMAX theaters. This is part of the studio’s promotion for the Blu-ray release of the four Indy movies, but if you’re a hardcore movie fan, you’ll know there’s nothing quite like the experience of seeing films like these in 70mm on a big screen. The IMAX re-release begins Friday, September 7th and runs through September 13th, 2012. What’s interesting about this is director Steven Spielberg personally supervised these alterations for IMAX in conjuction with Paramount, while working on the Blu-ray release. INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE was already formatted for 70mm on its original release, so there was no need to change it. If you’re in the mood to see LAST CRUSADE, and live in Texas, you can see it at Austin’s Alamo Drafthouse (the Alamo Ritz that is) from August 31st to September 6th.

It should also be noted that Spielberg talked to the New York Times about his intentions behind the re-release, saying:

It’s the only marked contrast we have to the generations that are seeing our movies on phones and hand-held platforms. It’s a complete relief to be able to see a film that many people have just experienced on a palm-sized platform technology, suddenly hurled at that them on an Imax-sized screen.

Spielberg also stated no special effects or other visual elements of the film were changed.

If you missed it, check out the preview trailer below for the Blu-ray set that shows some of what you can expect in the package… most notably 7, yes SEVEN hours of bonus features. Take a look at the video below to get an idea. They illustrate the restoration process (I’ve seen the new restored version of RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, and it’s incredible), show some on set hijinks (even with Sean Connery!), tell stories from the set, and show you never-before-seen cut footage. And yes, this is a “complete” set, so INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL is in there too… wait, does that mean we have no chance at a fifth film? Guess time will tell. Watch below and tell me you’re not drooling like me. You can pre-order the Indiana Jones Blu-ray Collection right here.
