Last summer at San Diego Comic-Con I had the pleasure of talking to director Scott Sanders and star Michael Jai White about their movie BLACK DYNAMITE, a loving tribute to the Blaxploitation films of the 1970’s. At the time, I had not yet been able to see the movie, only the trailer, which I was already in love with. Since then I’ve seen the movie several times, and thoroughly enjoyed every second. This is what GRINDHOUSE tried to do, but couldn’t quite get right. Sanders managed to capture the sensibilities of those older films while never quite overdoing it, and Michael Jai White embodied the spirit of actors like Freb Williamson and Jim Kelly without ever becoming a straight parody. The movie is quite simply a fitting throwback to the very cinema it pays homage to, and a whole lot of fun. Now the DVD and Blu-ray is set to come out February 16, complete with some nice bonus features and slick packaging.
An all-star cast led by Michael Jai White is featured in this 1970’s-style blaxploitation action fiilm about the legendary super crime fighter Black Dynamite. The Man killed his brother, pumped heroin into local orphanages, and flooded the ghetto with adulterated malt liquor. Black Dynamite was the one hero willing to fight The Man all the way from the blood-soaked city streets to the hallowed halls of the Honky House.
