Sam Raimi’s OZ: THE GREAT AND POWERFUL gets its first trailer and poster

From Sam Raimi (The SPIDER-MAN trilogy and the EVIL DEAD franchise) comes the tale of Oz, but this time the focus is not on Dorothy, but rather the Great Wizard and how he came to be the wonderful Wizard of Oz.

The trailer starts off in Kansas and just like the 1939 classic, it starts out in black and white, but as the the Great Wizard, or Osct ar Diggs as he is known as, gets swept away by a tornado in his hot-air balloon, soon the screen fills with wonderous color and from then on, we are treated to some of the inhabitants of the land of Oz including the two of the good witches (but be sure to wait to the last scene of the trailer to catch a glimpse of one of the wicked sisters….).

I think the trailer does a good job of teasing us with the movie but not much more than that. I think James Franco will do fine in the movie, however, at first glance, he doesn’t excite me in this one.  I think I am still a little let down that Robert Downey, Jr. had to step down from the role of Oscar Diggs, but I think in time and with more viewings I will be fine with the casting choice.  Of course, its not all about me, what do you think of Franco in what little we get from this teaser?

So check out the very first trailer for the flick and tell us what you think in the comments below.

OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL is directed by Sam Raimi and stars James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams, Zach Braff, Joey King and Bruce Campbell.

SYNOPSIS: Disney’s fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baums beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot–fame and fortune are his for the taking–that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity–and even a bit of wizardry–Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL is set to hit theaters on March 8, 2013.
