DREDD starring Karl Urban gets first teaser poster and official synopsis!

I am the law!  Well, we are not sure if that famous line will be uttered in this gritty remake, but we are now getting our first set of official marketing for this September’s DREDD. JoBlo and Lionsgate have unveiled the first teaser poster for DREDD starring Karl Urban as the titular character, and it’s about time.  We are just three months away from the movie being released and this is the first of the marketing that has hit.  Let’s just hope a trailer is on its way as well.

Like the movie promises to be, the poster is dark or foreboding, yet it works. Really well.  In DREDD, we will see Karl Urban take over the role that was first done in movies by Sylvester Stallone in JUDGE DREDD.  This take is said to be much more violent and closer to the comic routes which means three things:  it will be ultra-violent, Judge Dredd will not take off his helmet and Rob Schneider is no where near this thing!

Along with the new poster, we also have a few official images from the movie and again, it reinforces the violent aspect but also that the movie seems to be taking advantage of every penny of its smaller budget.  The shot of Dredd walking out with the city in the background looks gorgeous.  Check out the images below and the official synopsis at the end of the article.  Lovers or haters of Zack Snyder’s slow motion camera style will either love or hate the fact that portions of the movie were filmed in slow motion, however, as the synopsis reveals, there are actual story elements behind the slow motion beyond just wanting to get a cool looking shot.

DREDD is directed by Pete Travis and stars Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby and Lena Headey.

SYNOPSIS: The future America is an irradiated waste land.  On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One – a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets.  The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner.  Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge – a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo” experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed.

During a routing day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation.  A heinous crime calls them to a neighborhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture – a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) and her ruthless clan.  When they capture one of the clan’s inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound’s control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire.  With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival.

The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and director Pete Travis bring DREDD to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film.  Filmed in 3D with stunning slow motion photography sequences, the film returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s revered comic strip.

DREDD is set to hit 2D and 3D theaters on September 21, 2012.
