WEEKLY WRAP! – 10 More Stories From This Week in Film! (2012-06-15)

Every Friday, we will wrap-up 10 stories from around the internet and the business that didn’t make our normal news feed.  These could include nuggets, casting information, release dates, clips, cool movie-related stories, etc., that we feel you should know about or at least peaked our interest.  Check them out below.

1.

Box Office Mojo does a good job of keeping up with the release date changes and additions.  Here are a few that caught our attention:

The sequel to the 2005 hit will be directed by Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller and hit theaters on October 4, 2013.

COSMOPOLIS
The Robert Pattinson drama directed by David Cronenberg has set its US release date for August 17, 2012.

Digital Spy is reporting that work is moving ahead on the sequel to PROMETHEUS and that it will should be PARADISE (which is actually the original title for PROMETHEUS).  Not much else is known except in the article it does point out that in an interview with director Ridley Scott, he said in this one he did want to meet God, but the sequel may delve more into who the Engineers are and how bad they really are.

Spaeking of the Engineers, ComingSoon.net has posted some great pictures of the Elder Engineer which you can see below, but for more photos, click on the link and check them out over there.

Stephen King is having a resurgence as of late with many of his films heading to the screen or being remade for modern audiences.  With films like THE STAND and THE DARK TOWERS getting multi-film production deals and others like CARRIE and THE TEN O’CLOCK PEOPLE also heading to the screen, it is a good time to be a King fan.  This week also brought us news that one of King’s most terrifying stories, IT, is heading to the big screen and like THE STAND, it is getting split into two films.  This will not be the first adaptation of the book as there was the 1990 miniseries that saw Tim Curry as Pennywise the Clown and successfully helped turn clowns into things of nightmares.  THR is reporting that Cary Fukanaga (JANE EYRE) is going to helm the project.  No word on casting as we are too early in the process, but for my money someone needs to get Paul Giamatti on the phone.  If you are following in the footsteps of Tim Curry you need to be brilliant and have the ability to be extremely creepy and Paul just fits.  Can you see him in the makeup saying, “They ALL float down here. When you’re down here with us, you’ll float too!”

Casting Additions

THR is reporting that Hugh Laurie (House, M.D) is in negotiations to play the villain in the Jose Padilha remake of ROBOCOP.  He would play the head of OmniCorp, the company that builds the titular character.

Deadline is reporting that Portia Doubleday and Judy Greer are joining the remake of CARRIE which already stars Chloe Moretz and Julianne Moore.  Portia will play a bad girl and Judy will play the gym teacher.

Variety is reporting that Bill Paxton will be joining Denzel Washington, Mark Wahlberg and Paula Patton in the pulp-cop comic adaptation 2 GUNS and will be playing a CIA operative.

Variety is also reporting that Jean Dujardin (THE ARTIST) is in negotiations to join Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese’s THE WOLF OF WALL STREET about Leonardo’s character’s rise and fall on Wall Street.  He would play a Swiss banker.

Deadline is reporting that Benicio Del Toro is being looked at to headline AKA JIMMY PICARD about a post-World War II soldier who is suffering from a psychosomatic illness.

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Fandral the Dashing (played by Joshua Dallas) will be recast in THOR 2 due to scheduling conflicts.  Zachary Levi (who ironically was up for the role in THOR but had to back out due to scheduling conflicts) is said to be in final negotiations.

And last but not least, Darren Aronofsky’s NOAH has found two more cast additions.  Emma Watson and Ray Winstone are in final talks to join the Biblical epic according to Deadline and will be joining the all ready stellar cast of Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Logan Lerman and Douglas Booth.

Video Game adaptations are pretty much a hit or miss kind of thing.  Some would even say, even with the success of the RESIDENT EVIL franchise has been (of which the new trailer for the fifth installment just hit), that most are bad to worse (HITMAN, BLOODRAYNE, SUPER MARIO BROS., STREET FIGHTER, STREET FIGHTER: THE LEGEND OF CHUN LI, MORTAL KOMBAT, MORTAL KOMBAT: ANNIHILATION, MAX PAYNE, etc. ).  Tom Clancy has had some success with his books and creations coming to the big screen with the 4 released Jack Ryan films (and one more in the works that is being directed by Kenneth Branagh (THOR) and starring Chris Pine (STAR TREK) as Jack Ryan).  Now it appears that another one of his creations will be heading to the silver screen.  Deadline is reporting that Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, which follows the exploits of Sam Fisher who is a covert special agent of Third Echelon, a top-secret branch of the National Security Agency, is being shopped around to studios with both Warner Bros. and Paramount Pictures said to be the top two studios in the mix.  This is definitely in its infancy and there is not much else out there on this, but if you have been a fan of Sam Fisher and the Splinter Cell games, hopefully this news will make you happy.  Who do you think would be the best actor and director for this one?  Fan cast……NOW!

SuperheroHype! has posted some new images of Batman’s new ride in this summer’s THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. The Bat, as it is called in the film, is a flying jet-like contraption that will allow Batman to swoop over the skies of Gotham, but due to its shape, don’t expect a repeat of the humorous scene from 1989’s BATMAN where he flies above the clouds and creates the bat-symbol in the moon.  There’s also an image of Bane’s mysterious device.  Check out the images and let us know what you think.

Entertainment Weekly has posted the first images of Edward and Bella’s daughter in the upcoming THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN – PART 2. Renesmee is played by newcomer Mackenzie Foy and these images show the new undead family together for the first time.  Twi-Hards have been waiting very unpatiently for this one and while PART 1 may have been light on the action, my sources tell me (and by my sources, I am referring to my wife who is a huge Twi-Hard) the final chapter will be all out madness.  Check out the first images of Renesmee below and let us know what you think of the casting.

The PITCH PERFECT trailer and poster was released this week and its essentially BRING IT ON in the world of competitive accapella singing, complete with their very own Eliza Dushku character played by the talented Anna Kendrick.  I have to say, I was a sucker for the first BRING IT ON so it comes as no surprise that this one actually has my interest as well.  Oscar worthy, probably not, but the trailer looks funny and Rebel Wilson (BRIDESMAIDS) just cracks me up (“I’m horizontal running”). Check out the first trailer and poster below.

PITCH PERFECT
is directed by Jason Moore and stars Anna Kendrick, Brittany Snow, Anna Camp, Rebel Wilson, Alexis Knapp, Adam DeVine and Freddie Stroma.

SYNOPSIS: Beca (Anna Kendrick) is that girl who’d rather listen to what’s coming out of her headphones than what’s coming out of you. Arriving at her new college, she finds herself not right for any clique but somehow is muscled into one that she never would have picked on her own: alongside mean girls, sweet girls and weird girls whose only thing in common is how good they sound when they sing together, in the new out-loud comedy “Pitch Perfect.”

When Beca takes this acoustic singing group out of their world of traditional arrangements and perfect harmonies into all-new mash-ups, they fight to climb their way to the top of the cutthroat world of college a cappella. This could wind up either the coolest thing they’ll ever do or the most insane, and it will probably be a little of both.

Loaded with new takes on old favorites to hits of right now that are seamlessly mixed together, mashed-up and arranged like you’ve never heard before, “Pitch Perfect” is directed by Jason Moore, who opened our eyes to the very misbehaved life of puppets in the surprise Broadway sensation “Avenue Q.”

PITCH PERFECT is set to hit theaters on October 5, 2012.

10.

Finally for this week’s wrap, Movies.com gives us the first poster for the new horror film V/H/S which will see multiple film-makers directing different segments of the film about a group of friends hired to break into a creepy old house and retrieve a specific VHS tape.

V/H/S has multiple segments directed by Adam Wingard, Glenn McQuaid, Radio Silence, David Bruckner, Joe Swanberg and Ti West.

SYNOPSIS: When a group of petty criminals is hired by a mysterious party to retrieve a rare piece of found footage from a rundown house in the middle of nowhere, they soon realize that the job isn’t going to be as easy as they thought. In the living room, a lifeless body holds court before a hub of old television sets, surrounded by stacks upon stacks of VHS tapes. As they search for the right one, they are treated to a seemingly endless number of horrifying videos, each stranger than the last.

Bringing together some of the top filmmakers in the game today, this wickedly conceived horror anthology sends the viewer through a gauntlet of suspense, terror, shock, and downright brutality—instantly distinguishing itself from a sea of lackluster found-footage horror flicks. The diverse and deviously creative minds behind V/H/S shatter any preconceived notions about the genre, making it feel inventive and captivating once again.

V/H/S will be available through Magnolia On-Demand starting on August 31, 2012 and then will have a limited theatrical run on October 5, 2012
