SXSW 2012: EXTRACTED sneak preview/trailer – it’s like INCEPTION but with memories

All week long we’ll be telling you about the coolest stuff to do and see at SXSW 2012. Topping our Tuesday, we present a trailer and info about a cool-looking new sci-fi project called EXTRACTED.

As an attending journalist as the South by Southwest Film Festival year after year, I have to sift through a LOT of e-mails about films showing during the event, filmmakers in attendance, and talent walking the red carpet. Figuring out which movies I want to make time for while I’m there can be a real chore sometimes. Occasionally I’ll see a trailer or clip from a film that gets me seriously interested. The latest to fall into that category is EXTRACTED. Being a big fan of director Christopher Nolan’s INCEPTION and Duncan Jones’ SOURCE CODE, there’s obvious similarities here to both, going into someone’s memories and potentially using that technology to solve a problem or clear a man of a criminal charge. But as with any radical new invention, the chance fo something going wrong is almost always a given. Check out the trailer below to give yourself an idea of just how EXTRACTED explores that. This is low budget science fiction with a high concept, and some of my favorite movies are just that. Shane Carruth’s PRIMER is to this day one of my favorite sci-fi flicks, and it was made for essentially nothing. Russ Pond’s FISSURE is another great example of doing a lot with a modest budget. If director Nir Paniry can pull off this fascinating concept, this may end up being one of my favorite movies to come out of SXSW this year… we’ll see.
